Secure remote access to home media — without a cloud subscription

The Problem

A client wanted to access their over-the-air DVR remotely — from a phone, from a hotel, from anywhere. The device didn't support native remote streaming, and third-party cloud solutions added ongoing cost and complexity they didn't want.

What We Built

A Tailscale mesh VPN with a Windows laptop configured as a subnet router, hardened for always-on operation. The solution runs entirely on hardware the client already owned, with no subscription and no ongoing maintenance burden.

The Outcome

Full remote access from any device, verified over cellular before handoff. The client can stream live and recorded TV from anywhere with no cloud dependency and no recurring cost beyond their existing internet connection.

Home network rebuilt for security, reliability, and the long term

The Problem

A flat home network with no segmentation meant smart home devices, personal computers, and guest traffic all shared the same network. Performance was inconsistent and there was no isolation between trusted and untrusted devices.

What We Built

A fully segmented UniFi network across three logical zones: a primary trusted network, an isolated IoT VLAN for smart home devices, and a guest zone. Each zone has appropriate firewall rules, DNS handling, and access controls.

The Outcome

A stable, secure home network with clear separation between device types. IoT devices can no longer reach personal computers. Guest access is fully isolated. The architecture is documented and ready to scale as the household grows.

The Problem

What We're Building

A phased fractional CIO engagement covering automated lead response, quoting workflows, social media automation, and a full technology stack review. Each milestone delivers a working system — not a slide deck — before the next phase begins.

Early Results
